OBJECTIVE: To create a complete animal contact program incorporating both the risk assessment and health questionnaire into one packet.

METHODS/IMPLEMENTATION: The unique feature of this program is the tie to EH&S registrations for recombinants, biologicals, transgenic animals and select agents/acute toxins. A further unique tie is to the security system within multiple animal care, housing and procedure facilities. Without completion of this program and all requirements, research with agents and animals is prevented and the PI notified in a timely fashion as to the missing components.

RESULTS/DISCUSSION: Anyone at the University who intends to have contact with animals must complete the forms for submission to both Environmental Health and Safety and the Occupational Medicine groups. Required completion of the forms is tied directly to the ability to either work in Animal Care Services or to obtain IACUC approval to purchase or work directly with animals or have access to the locations where animals are housed.

CONCLUSIONS: Compliance with this new program is significantly enhanced by this direct link that essentially prohibits non-registered persons from gaining access to the facilities. The coverage of this format includes husbandry people, principal investigators, field investigators and various levels of student participation. The flexibility of the program allows for changes to the format to cover emerging and changing environments as well as to prevent unauthorized persons from coming into contact with animals.
