Paper Title:

WIE Program Assessment Tools: How They Will Benefit Your Programs, Your Students, Your Institution, and WIE Programs Nationally

Date & Time:

06/09/03  02:00

Abstract:

Women in Engineering (WIE) programs are a crucial part of the U.S. response to the need for more women in engineering professions. For maximum effectiveness, WIE programs must have access to validated assessment instruments for evaluating recruitment and retention activities. Quality assessment data helps justify ongoing funding, and provides benchmarking data to support the implementation of new WIE programs. Panelists from a variety of U.S. universities will discuss their participation in a three-year, collaborative NSF grant for developing exportable WIE program assessment instruments and models. These tools will allow WIE program directors to assess their program’s activities and make well-informed, evaluative decisions. Panel participants will discuss how lessons learned to date have been applied and the advantages that the current assessment tools have, and will describe tools in development and their expected impact on program effectiveness, retention of students, university recruitment efforts, funding requests, and in sharing benchmarking data with colleagues.
