Paper Title:

Designed For Success: Edible Car In Residence Program

Date & Time:

06/10/03  03:30

Abstract:

National initiatives such as Zoom Into Engineering and the introduction of the outreach section of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) website attest to the confidence in outreach programs to increase awareness of science and engineering careers, increase general interest in science and engineering and introduce or reinforce key scientific concepts. One such program, the first Annual Edible Car Contest, was held to celebrate “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.. The event attracted thirty middle and high school students who built cars from edible materials and then raced the cars. Participants also visited with the campus Society of Automotive Engineering Car Team, completed a scavenger hunt and viewed engineering videos. Though this hugely successful event met our goals and exceeded our expectations, our goal was to develop a pilot program to provide opportunities for more students to participate in events that demystify technical processes and promote engineering careers.
