Paper Title:

Title IX in Action

Date & Time:

06/11/03  09:45

Abstract:

The Women's Educational Equity Act Resource Center was created in 1977, and one of its goals has been help schools comply with Title IX requirements, both in letter and in spirit. This U.S. Department of Education-funded program has worked proactively for 25 years to address the needs and promote the success of specific populations of girls and women who face multiple challenges, including girls and women with disabilities, and females of color. Panelists will share some of the successes of this program in the area of science and engineering, as well as some of the ongoing challenges and lessons learned. The moderator will talk about some of the recent legal controversies and challenges to Title IX and what they mean to gender-focused work under the auspices of this legislation. The goal will be to analyze progress, and chart direction(s) ahead, in order to strategically navigate the anticipated political and legal environment.
