IT Scholars - A Collaborative WIE/MEP/UROP Initiative At The University Of Michigan |

Abstract: |
There is increasing national concern over the severe and continuing underrepresentation of women and historically underrepresented minority students in computer engineering, computer science, and electrical engineering. At the University of Michigan, all first year engineering students are required to take an introductory programming course in C++ and matlab. Students enter with incredibly diverse backgrounds and experiences in computing and programming. Although this course is not intended as an introduction to computer engineering/science, many students perceive that it is. If the students do not have a successful or encouraging experience in this course, they are not likely to consider further courses or a concentration in related fields. In order to make this gateway course a positive experience for all students, the Women in Science and Engineering Program, the Minority Engineering Program Office, and the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program developed and implemented the IT Scholars Program. We will discuss implementation and evaluation results. |
