Leveraging Experience To Accelerate Progress: Moving Towards Gender Equity In Engineering Education |
Date & Time: |
06/09/03 11:10 |
Abstract: |
Tufts University and the Intel Foundation sponsored a conference on gender equity in engineering education at the National Academy of Engineering on January 14-15, 2003. Selected colleges and universities sent faculty and administration teams, led by the engineering dean, to the conference. The meeting provided a venue for exchange of information, highlighted cutting edge research and programs addressing gender issues in engineering, and gave participants the opportunity to synthesize this information into a plan to accelerate gender equity at their institutions. Preliminary outcomes from the conference include (a) challenges that deans and faculty face in addressing issues of gender equity and successful strategies for overcoming these obstacles; (b) types of institutional support and administrator or faculty roles that promote initiatives and change; and (c) action plans to mainstream gender equity.
