Abstract:

This is the final report of a three-year low-cost project that implemented academic support activities for female students for the eight engineering technology programs at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to improve their retention. The engineering technology programs are in civil, computer, electrical, electrical/mechanical, manufacturing, mechanical, telecommunications, and undeclared engineering technology. This project was funded by the University of the State of New York Education Department Perkins III (VTEA) Formula-Funded Allocation. Women students in engineering technology programs at RIT are entering a nontraditional career field in very small numbers. The objective of this program was to improve the retention of freshman and sophomore women students with study groups, peer tutoring, and attendance at Society of Women Engineer regional conferences. Students that participated in the study groups could apply for reimbursement of purchased laboratory kits. The intended outcome of this program is to improve the retention of women students in Engineering Technology programs at RIT. The retention of women students for the past two years at RIT improved approximately 18% each year for the past two years.
